Well it is the two week mark for Jim's pups.
I am thrilled to say how well they are doing.
Last week I took Heather in to see the Vet due to nasal congestion.
I was not happy, to say the least.
Fionn was at 2.3 pounds and Heather was at 1.8 pounds.
Not bad for just over a week old, but I felt I needed to make a little change.
Five days later, today, I took them in for de-worming.
Dr. Mccord was really pleased with the pups, he called them "robust".
He also said "these are some big puppies".
I left the clinic much happier this time.
Fionn was 3.3 pounds and Heather was 3.1 pounds.
I have been using Jim's formula recipe, but I wanted to tweak it a little.
I read lots of article on bottle feeding pups, most said something about possible aspiration.
It made me think. I remember what I would do when I was working as a nurse.
We would thicken liquids to help people with a tendency to aspirate.
By thickening theirs liquids our patients were able to swallow more easily and have a less chance of aspiration.
So, I changed the type of bottle I was using and increased the amount of yogurt I put in the formula. The pups began to feed more efficiently and WOW, they have really grown.
By increasing the yogurt, I had increased the calories, increased the good bacteria and made a thicker formula that the pups love.
I have seen another formula that I would use if these were my pups.
It is even richer in calories and thicker in consistency, but I'll wait for my next litter of rescue orphans to try it out on.
Mean while Fionn and Heather are doing good and I continue to pray that I take the proper care of them.
Enjoy the pictures, they are adorable pups and are becoming affectionate. Heather really likes to cuddles and she licks my hands, not just trying to suck, but actually lick. I can't wait to see their little eyes open.
