Meet Gertie and Nanette.......Two of my chickens, they are Barred Plymouth Rocks and will lay brown eggs. They are black and white and have feisty little personalities.
They are named after my Mom, the late Flora Gertrude Slaton Drew...and
another family member who will not be identified any further.
Why would you name a chicken after your mother, you ask????
Well for those who knew my mom, know that she was full of "spit and vinegar". She was a straight shooter and told it like it was, or better yet, told it as she saw it. She was petite and feisty and this little chicken seems to have her personality, my mother would love it that I named this chicken after her. Mom was called Gertie as a kid. She did not mind being called Gertie, but if you called her Gravel Gert.....well those were fighten words.
The other chicken, Nanette aka Nadine has a very similar personality.....so enough said there.
So far I have Big Bertha, Nellie, Ardie, Ada and Anna.
The two Buff Orpingtons are named Banana and Poker because my niece Maggie, gave me two little chicks that she had hatched and raised as a class project. I was excited to get them, but soon after they arrived one of my dogs killed them........they were in a bunny hutch temporarily and the
bottom was rusted......Nutmeg scratched out the bottom and got to the chicks :>( ........so Banana and Poker are named after them...
I have two more to name. Any suggestions?
